A fun day out with the boys

Homeschoolers love to say that every day is educational, that we are always learning. I tend to agree with this for the most part, although I know many would dismiss the idea. For some it is hard to equate learning with anything other than textbooks/workbooks/classrooms.

Today we had to be out most of the day for errands, and I thought it would be fun to see how much educational moments I could find. Now to be fair we are in Southern California, and there is a good deal of history, nature, and art all around us. That is easily reflected in our day, but it was still fun to point everything out to the kids.

We started our day in Fullerton at the library. We had to meet our E.S. for our monthly charter school meeting. We have been to this library many times, but we never took the time to explore all the history there. Today we did, and we were surprised to find so much history and artifacts for public viewing.

There is an area in the back of the library with prehistoric bones found in Orange County. There is as area that is dedicated to the history of Fullerton and Orange County, and it has the original chairs and tables from the first library in Fullerton.  There is also an old book collection down in the children’s area that includes many classics that my book lover enjoyed examining. Finally there were some wonderful glass windows preserved from the children’s room in the original library.

After we left the library we decided to go eat lunch, and on a whim we stopped at a Ruby’s that we had never been to before. It was in an older part of Anaheim in an area that is currently being renovated and updated. I wasn’t expecting a chain restaurant to have anything educational in it, but Ruby’s is a retro restaurant, and we were in luck.

The walls were covered with pics from old diners and historical pictures of Anaheim.

The interior was in the style of a mid-century restaurant. The kids were interested in the fans on the wall and the art deco style.

Right as we were leaving Decca spotted a spider outside the window. I thought it was just something small, but then I looked at it. It was big and very cool. Not sure what kind it was but finding it was the highlight of my lunch. Nature studies just got checked of my list of educational topics for the day.

After Ruby’s we headed to Downtown Disney. The kids wanted to stop off at the Lego Store, and I thought it would be fun to walk around and window shop. By the time we got to Disney I was done trying to make the day educational (although we still spotted some interesting things). Instead we just had fun, after all kids need to do that too.

Tru enjoying the view.
